are there other types of floors which require less maintenance? this kitchen floor, i feel i can never keep up with it. we take off our shoes so there is minimal outside dirt being brought in from that. but i use a wet-jet swiffer and also a scrub brush, but can never really get the floor clean, and then it's filthy again. it takes HOURS to clean! is there a better way? am I using inefficient methods?

The one thing you don't tell us is how old the floor is (or was it there when you got there...).

The finish on one-piece vinyl and sticky tile vinyl floors looks really good for about a year and a half in a high traffic area. A kitchen is THE most popular room in the house.

It is possible that the finish has tiny scratches in it from day to day wear and tear... nothing you have done, just wear. The problem is that these little scratches hold the dirt whenever it is present. I am sure your floor is mint when you're done but give it a few days (or hours, if busy there) and poof!... grubby looking.

Unfortunately there isn't a durable / long-lasting refinish product for this... you might need a replacement. Having said that, you can try mop and glo... This stuff actually puts a finish on the floor.

Clean it like you normally do but then as the last step; do the mop and glo thing but clean the mop often as you apply. It might rescue the look of the floor and help fill the tiny scratches as well, thus resisting dirt getting snagged in them.

Worth a try maybe?

Good luck!

Kitchen floors get lots of sticky stuff and food dropped all the time. Just use a regular mop and pail as it's faster. I have a swifter too but mopping is faster.
