The Beatles were formed in the late fifties and were called "The Silver Beetles" The base player was an art student named Stu Sutcliffe and he died. When he died Paul McCartney took over the bass players position, and the name of the band was changed to the Beatles. They hit the scene in the early sixties and after John Lennon did a stint in Varsity stadium in Toronto with Yoko Ono and a number of other well know musicians Lennon went back to the band and said " it's over!" that was in nineteen seventy. Paul was the one who tried to keep the band together but John refused to relent. It was left up to McCartney to break the news that the Beatles were no more. It was finished. As a result Paul McCartney was branded as the one who broke up the Beatles when in reality it was John Lennon who put a stop to the band.
There was a drummer that was with the band when Sutcliffe died Pete Best was his name but obviously he wasn't the best, he was replaced by the band with Richard Stark he was called Ringo Starr.
Stu Sutcliffe is the one who is generally known as the fifth Beatle. Not the drummer that the band fired. Billy Preston is also known as the fifth member, he actually wrote some the songs for the Beatles but was never given credit for his work.

George Martin is considered the 5th beatle. That's not the guy you're looking for you're looking for the guy who was their drummer before ringo, pete best, who was kicked out before they made it big.
