Does it make sense to get a degree in graphic design since other people out there can easily be better at the job due to all their work experience?

No. Yes.

I once was told that someone else got a job I didn't because they had a design degree.

However, most of the time, I don't think it matters. Degrees don't count as work experience, although a good teacher can be a good reference. A portfolio is more important, but a degree is a good place to build one.

The great things about a degree though is that you have mentors to guide you as you build your portfolio, it's easier to concentrate when you have deadlines and grades/assessments, and you make a lot of friends in the same field. You can also potentially get jobs through the contacts you make in your degree.

If you have the opportunity, degrees can be fun things. They don't guarantee you work though. It doesn't have to be in the field you want to work in, but University can be a great experience.

A degree often exposes you to a lot that you might not have seen otherwise. Certain companies know this and are willing to pay more for those people who do have degrees, as they often have more diverse training and experience across fields of study.
