Some of my favorite books were by Edward Eager - a series of books about four siblings who found a magical talisman. I also liked Madeline L'Engle books.

Harriet the Spy and The Long Secret by Louise Fitzhugh. I just reread them recently and they were even better this time around as an adult.

Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. It was the perfect mixture of reality and fantasy. My fiance bought me a collectors edition of it for my birthday...best gift I ever got.
