I'm planning to go backpacking in Hokkaido. Would like to know the cheapest accommodation, be it dormitory or youth hostel. Would appreciate if you can provide me price and links to the accommodation. I'm a single traveling male. Thanks!

The first website is Japan National Tourist Organization. It will give you the all kind of information you might need for your backpacking trip in Hokkaido and Japan in general.

The second website will help you with your accommodation in Hokkaido. Pick the area you are going to be and click on name of the hostel. It will give you the price and a brief summary.

Enjoy your trip

Hi,

Try and look for a resonably priced ryokan (kind of like a B & B) once in a while too. They're often not much more expensive than a hostel, and they have a lot more ambience (not to mention super comfortable futon beds with huge duvets!).

Take a tent. In Hokkaido they are really easy-going about where you pitch it. Seriously; in Hokkaido it's OK to camp overnight just about anywhere within reason that isn't marked, "no camping"-national forests, by the side of the road, parks, etc. I've seen tents in the outfield of a ballfield in Hokkaido, as long as the campers are out of there by the time someone wants to play ball it's live and let live.

For hostels, you can book online with this site:

Dorms are mostly only found in Tokyo and Kyoto and Osaka

The cheapest i can think of is a cardboard box that you can fold up and put in your backpack, then re-assemble at night.
