When someone throwns a strike, and the ball curves to one side, everyone calls it a "brooklyn" WHY?

It's when a right handed bowler, hits the 1 & 2 pins, with the ball. In other words instead of hitting the 1& 3 combination. It is sometimes refered to as a "Brooklyn strike"

I have heard the term. And you are exactly right - how would the guests even know how much the plate is and you are right on to not expect a huge gift with a significant # of out of towners. Also, speaking from the guests perspective, prices can range dramatically in an area (where I'm from around $75 - $100 per plate is low) -- why should a guest, if they could find out the cost, feel obligated to gift you $200 per person because you chose a more expensive place to have your wedding? As a rule of thumb, I try to give a generous gift at a wedding because I understand they are rather costly and it is helping out the couple when you are in a position to give a generous gift. I do not take the cost of my own attendance into account as it can vary and I might not be able to afford it.

Its a slam on Brooklyn, NY. Basically you're hitting the "pocket" on the wrong side. Brooklyn, as in, the wrong side of town.
