CURE FOR DIABETICS-

There is currently no cure for diabetes; the condition, however, can be managed so that patients can live a relatively normal life. Treatment of diabetes focuses on two goals: keeping blood glucose within normal range and preventing the development of long-term complications. Careful monitoring of diet, exercise, and blood glucose levels are as important as the use of insulin or oral medications in preventing complications of diabetes.

Body for Life is a great diet for diabetics, it has you eating small portions more often, so your blood sugar won't spike nor will it get too low. I highly recommend the book. Your local library probably has it, just check it out and decide if you can stick to the program before investing in the book (it's not expensive).

You might check with your local gym or Y to see if they offer water areobics. These are low impact excercises made easily by the water. It's a great way to start getting more active and losing weight while building muscle but not putting stress on your joints.

The biggest thing is stimulating your metabolism. By eating smaller portions more often your metabolism is boosted which is what you need from any diet.

The very fact you are asking this question shows that you are willing to do what it takes to take care of yourself, that puts you way ahead of many who disregard their diabeties and then pay the price through nerve damage like diabetic neuropathy, etc.

Good luck!

I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1988.

Since that time, I have gone through a lot--not being compliant. I suffered two bouts of ketoacidosis--being hospitalized for days at a time. I have been on both oral medication and insulin--at times both together. Now, I am on insulin.

For me, it was when I became a vegetarian five years ago that I started to see a real change. I eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables--and stay far, far away from starches and sugars for the most part. I also drink a gallon of water throughout the day on most days.

The other big thing is cardiovascular exercise. I challenge myself to do at least an hour on the elliptical machine, stair climber or treadmill. I'm sure that jogging or any other exercise that gets your heart rate in the target range for you would be fine. The link at the bottom is for a heart rate calculator.

So...the real answer for me has been dropping all meat, most dairy--drinking a lot of water, and doing a lot of cardiovascular exercise. It really, really, really has made a tremendous difference in my life as a diabetic. I actually feel younger.....Good luck!!!

Adherence to a diabetic diet is an important aspect of controlling elevated blood sugar in patients with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has provided guidelines for a diabetic diet. The ADA diet is a balanced, nutritious diet that is low in fat, cholesterol, and simple sugars. The total daily calories are evenly divided into three meals. In the past two years, the ADA has lifted the absolute ban on simple sugars. Small amounts of simple sugars are allowed when consumed with a complex meal

Any type of exercise will help.

As for your diet, whole foods, including whole grains and legumes. The single best diet for diabetics is vegan. No matter how you chose to do this, though, make certain that your doctor's are OK with it and that you have seen an RD who is also a CDE.

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.

And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.

My mom is diabetic. She mixes the foods .Like she eats 5 times a day.She eats lactates, grains, fruits and veggies, fat stuff, and all that. She just eats a little of everything. Instead of eating one hamburger in example, she eats half! It is best to eat a salad with ranch or something to make it healthy and tasty at the same time! Eat a salad before each main meal and it will fill you up with healthy stuff and then eat the main food(hamburger, taco, etc.) after you already are kind of full. Eat kind of like this: 8am- oatmeal(low sugar kind), with banana and a toast with peanut butter and jelly 11am-Yougurt(low fat/sugar), with granola 1pm- main meal(remember the salad) 4pm-fruit salad or something like it 6-7pm-cereal or salad THIS IS.....waht my mom usually eats like and she has improved her diabetes very finely and is now controlling it. Hope it helps! REMEMBER: -the salad -drink lots of water -reduce sweet drinks(its hard) -walk(get around 25mins of exercise a day) -you can eat anything you want in small quantities -don't over eat -YOU CAN DO IT!!
