Is it important that I feed my baby cereal? I feed this to him once a day. He then eats 2 jars of either squash, peas, green beans, or sweet potatoes later on in the day. What nutritional value is in cereal that he will not get from the veggies?

The cereal has iron, zinc and 6 B vitamins that are essential for your baby health and growth and aid in development. It also helps transition to more solids.

Most people with babies with bad reflux give it in a bottle even though it can be potentially dangerous. That is why it is a last resort, because babies have a hard time eating off of a spoon at that young age. We plan to skip rice cereal all together and give baby oatmeal at 5 or 6 months. Rice cereal is actually difficult for babies to digest and can casue constipation. Many people suggest going with oatmeal instead. It may help a baby sleep at night, but that's only because their tummies are not able to digest it and it sits in there longer, giving them the illusion that they are full.

If you look at the 4 food groups you will notice that grains and breads fill up a great deal of it. Rice and oatmeal cereal is very important for babies for fiber and the added vitamins and iron that have been added to the cereal. Do you have WIC? In Oklahoma if you are on WIC you will have to take classes about children's nutrition. Good Luck.

It has the iron that he is missing by not only breastfeeding or getting formula. The cereal once a day is just fine. Good luck

None of my children like baby cereal and never eat it. It is something good to start with, that normally does not have an allergic reaction. My doctor said it was fine that they did not eat baby cereal.
