I couldnt agree with you more. I would reccomend that you read "Sociology of Religions" By Weber. I have found to really agree with this theories on religion and why it is a functioning part of society. For one people get a realease of Suffering, they gain a sense of compensation for there suffering, and a sense of worthiness. Also Esspecially chrisitianity i have concluded is a polytheistic religion. Why is there a need for saints? its a way to surround one self with "heros, or functional Gods". Really if you can read Webers book i think u may like it...

Alexandria, my chum, you're an truly strong man or woman in a lot of respects yet you're also a storehouse of a few really unusual thoughts. initially, as "mosskopf" factors out, the Masons are a only fraternal hotel. on the grounds that they tell individuals to go away their rank, politics, and faith on the door, the nobility, the religions, and the politicians all hate them and vilify them.. they are probable between the most humane agencies on the planet. Witnesses and Mormons do have some extraordinary theologies, granted, yet they are neither into Masonry nor the destruction of humanity. Scientology is a only money-making corporation that L. Ron Hubbard invented on a gamble and offered to the wealthy and gullible. They likewise haven't any reason to ruin the source of their wealth. The Christian and Islamic branches of monotheism are the most unfavourable forces between the religions, they both imagine they have a "god-given" correct and duty to impose their beliefs on everybody else, even with if it ability killing them. reward on your journey!

I would say that people's lack of faith is what is causing the calamity. These people(that you see quite frequently on here) are always spewing hatred and how they seem to be proud to be athiest. I have always figured that these people were simply too stubborn or stupid to understand religion's intention: to bring us closer to God. However, I feel that man has lost his way and it is the church's responsibility to help bring some of those lost souls back to the church before time grows short. I know that if the Second coming happened tomorrow, there would be a lot of sorry people. Oh well, I've been faithful so I don't care if those people want to be saved or not. I am just happy that I've done my part.

It is not the religions, it is the morons that practice the religions. It is humanity destroying humanity. Let's put the blame where it belongs and leave the religion out of it. If everyone followed religion the way it was intended, this world would be a better place to live it. You write "is this man's way to justify control over their fellow man?" Man has free will to do as he wants without religion even entering into the situation. It is his/her twisted concept of religion if they happen to commit a crime in the name of their religion.
As I stated before, it is man that is responsible for the atrocites. They just happened to be of the christian, jewish, and muslim religion.

Which three are you counting? Christians and Muslims, and their bitter bickering, really are causing serious problems. But which one do you count as the third? Jews? Their reasons for being involved in conflict are somewhat different. The Christians and Muslims both believe they have a duty to convert others to their religion. The Jews do not. In fact, about the only people who convert to Judaism are those who marry Jews. The Jews do, however, have some real conflict with the Muslims, as you know. That's not really over religion, but over land.

It isn't the religions that are flawed. For example, Christ's teachings are perfect. There is nothing more noble than following God's commandments to lead a pure life, and to love everyone.
It's mankind that is flawed. It's what MAN does that is wrong, not religion in itself.
Oh, and I'm a Christian, and I have NEVER hurt ANYONE in trying to "promote" my beliefs. And I don't plan to. Ask my agnostic husband about that.

Three? Islam, undeniably. Christianity, on a far, far smaller scale but yes, it's clearly not a positive force...... What's the third religion you're talking about? Buddhism? Hinduism? I just don't see any Hindu suicide bombers, maybe I missed that one.
Maybe the third would be statism, if you consider that a religion - there I'd DEFINITELY agree with you. Marx has inspired even more violence than Muhammad.

Excellent question.
I believe in the inherent goodness of religions but most have somehow lost their way. Perhaps if coupled with a philosophy of human rights a religion could be practiced without imposing hardship on anyone else.

hate to tell you this honey, but we as humans are what you call sinners and as such are evil. Even if religon didnt exist, there would much crime. In fact there would be more crime and death.
It is a very shallow statement on your part. What about the millions of bablies killed through abortion. Hundreds of thousands murdered each year in the world or hundreds of thousands raped. Fact is; many many many more crimes and murders and deaths occurr each year outside the bounds of religon.
