I come from an old Southern family so there are a lot of superstitions I'm familiar with and follow:
If a bird flies into your house, a member of that family will die.
On New Year's a man who is dark-haired, handsome, and cannot be flat-footed must walk into the house first for good luck. Also "wash closthes on New Year's Day, wash a member of the family away".
When moving to a new home, never take your old broom with you. It has dirt and dust that contains bad memories and vibes from the old home and should be thrown out. Also, if a broom falls by itself, company is coming soon.
Never turn back and look into the eyes of a person you are leaving (even from a visit). If you do, you will cause that person bad luck.
Never break a mirror. It's seven and a half years of bad luck. Don't walk under ladders either.
If a black cat crosses your path, you must cross your fingers to avoid the bad luck the cat provides.
Pick up pennies only on heads. Heads is good luck, tails is bad. Also, throw a coin into a fountain and make a wish, it will come true (the larger the amount the coin is worth, the sooner and more probability of the wish coming true).
Seeing a shooting star is very good luck and should be wished upon.
That's all I can think of for now, if I think of more I'll come back. Hope it helps!

Oh Yeah!!! As a former Minor Leaguer, I can tell you that my superstitions never left me, when I played I did everything at the same time every day, it all revolved around game time, my game socks were not put on until 15 minutes before the game, I ate a pregame meal an hour and 15 minutes before the game....15 was big with me! Now I have to sit in the same seat every time if the team does well when I am in that seat, if they stink it up from that seat then I will not sit there again (this is in my living room). My snacks have to be the same for every game because they worked the last time, if there is a blowout then there is a whole sale change of snacks...and clothing is always the same. I always go the bathroom between the third and fourth inning and hold it until the 8th after that.

I am not superstitious, yet I don't like the number 13. When peeling potatoes I always make sure to peel either 12 or 14, and I never book myself in on row 13 at a theater or in a plane.
Good luck on your project.

I didnt believe in Friday the 13th until this October.. I had the worst horse ride of my life and also broke my ankle on that day so ya..
But you should do some research on like Friday the 13th, broken glass, walking under ladders, black cats etc
I know most of these superstitions come from old religious traditions. Like adam and eve were supposedly banished from the garden of eden on the 13th, most witch hangings happened on the 13th etc

Midwest USA.
Say "Rabit, Rabit, Rabit Day" on the first of every month and you'll have good luck the entire month. But it has to be the vey first thing you say outloud when you wake up. My neighbor lady told me this when I was a kid, now all of my customers try and do it every month. I own a bar so this is taken very seriously.
Always heard the unlucky 13 thing (many buildings don't have a 13th floor; the salt thing; black cats; walking under ladders; don't prescribe to any of them, but I do knock on wood as a take back kind of thing.

the superstition where you knock on wood gets me. it comes from pagan religion, they believed that good spirits lived in trees, so if you knocked on wood a good spirit would follow you around for the rest of the day.

I'm not superstitious at all , but I must admit that Deja'vu freaks me out a little bit.
( my spelling of deja'vu must be way off because the spell check couldn't figure it out.)
