As the y say - art is in the eye of the beholder. Like writing, reading can be therapeutic - especially when one find it beautiful and inspirational.
It all depends on the individual.

It's amazing what poetry can do to us...depending on our moods...
Sometimes, when I'm down in the dumps, and I read an inspiring poem, or a poem about the beauty of nature or something, it makesme feel better, and I suddenly wan to clean my room or plant a tree lol.
Other times, if I'm feelin down and I read a depressing poem, I want to cry and crawl into bed and sleep forever.
I think in extreme cases, poetry is capable of making us do things we would otherwise never dream of doing.
One more example: I was crushing on this guy, and I read a poem about daring and adventure and just going for your dreams, and for some reason I was equating this crush to, like, a life-changing event or something o_0, and I read the poem, and I thought, Yeah! I'm just gonna go tell him how I feel! But I didn't. Even though the lines from the poem kept comin back, I was just too much of a scaredy.
Anyway, sorry for the entirely pointless and stupid story. Great question! =)

There's beauty in it. True beauty never fails to impact people. And poetry can be interpreted in so many different ways, even by the same person (at different times). The interpretation or the message you gain from it can stay with you. Poetry can tug at the heartstrings in a way no story or movie can.

I'm not sure this is what you desire in an answer, but here goes.
I write poetry to express what is happening within - in my mind, my life, my spirit, my frustrations, my peacefulness, my God.
It helps me get rid of pent-up feelings, anger, joy, love.
I do hope what I write and what I attempt to impart, make a beautiful impression on, and touches the depth of my readers' souls.
Failing any of that, it means that they have missed the point and I have missed the mark.

I have always considered poetry to be sort of an emotional memory bank. If another person can hear or read your work or another poets work and come away with similar feelings, the poet has done their job. I try to read mine aloud or have someone with a good voice to read it back to me. That lets me know if I need to modify it in any way to get my meaning across.

The hoi ploi say "Poetry?"
"You silly , or half witted?
None of that crap for me.
I can go anywhere and be bullshitted.
Shakespeare was a flaming sissy.
Oscar Wilde? I call him "Missy!"
Primpy, pretentious, and phony.
So many words, so much baloney!"
