It saddens me also. I have known of 'honor killings' and other brutal punishments for decades now. I studied Arab culture and Islam in the late 60s and 70s and ever since then. These killings and other barbaric punishments are rooted in Sharia Law which emanates from the Quran and Hadith and have been practiced in Islamic countries for centuries. The fostering of this type behavior is one of the reasons that I will never view Islam as a 'peaceful' religion. It is a horrible religion (in spite of some decent and worthwhile attributes) because it causes people who practice it to be barbaric and inhumane and to not value human life, international law or independent thinking.
