Toward the end of "The Time Machine", by H.G. Wells, the Earth stops it's rotation and a big ol' nasty monster comes out of the ocean and attacks the time traveller. What is that monster supposed to be anyway? Like a Crab, or a Roach, or what?

In the book, he goes forward and see's that the air is real bad, everything is dead, the Earth stops moving, and so does the ocean. The Morlocks have long since been extinct. I think in the movie he just didn't go far enough into the future and saw when the Morlocks took over. This giant monster crawls out of the ocean and comes at him, but it's like a weird crustacean.

Not sure about the book, but the movie starring Guy Pearce is awesome... it's funny you should ask about the end of it though - because the end of the movie has people asking a lot of questions too - I was actually gonna post one today, believe it or not.

At the end of the movie, the Morlocks came from underground - not sure if it's the same thing in that version.

I always thought that it was supposed to be an evolutionary descendant of some type of invertabrate (such as a cockroach). The theory nowadays is that roaches and other similar species are more hardy, and will likely survive and populate the planet even after humans and other mammals have died out (which appeared to be the case at that time period in the book.) Hope this helps.
