temporary effects on some meditators:
Restlessness of Mind and Body: These effects are more difficult to overcome. In this instance, one should physically try to relax the body: tense the whole body and then relax it again. After this, concentrate harder on the breathing, it is only with time and experience that one can go deeper into theta wave, access concentration, so that bliss may arise to eliminate restlessness and worry.
Freshness of Mind: Some meditators will find that their minds are totally fresh after meditation. This is because they have managed to clear all the intellectual rubbish while practising one-pointed concentration. This freshness will in turn prevent sleep later on, and insomnia will ensue. What is the remedy? Meditate longer so that one goes deeper into theta or even delta wave. If the meditator is not sufficiently skilled to do that, then one should meditate only in the mornings.
Drowsiness: If one goes deeper into theta wave, one of the features in this state is drowsiness. This is much more frequent than freshness. The problem now is 'how to keep awake'. The first step is to be more alert and aware, and not to be so concentrated. If this fails then one should get up and wash one's face with cold water. Another method is to open one's eyes partially or fully. Whatever it is this, meditator would surely enjoy a good night's sleep.

Meditation is a wonderful way to feel energetic, because it puts your brain in a deeper state of relaxation than you would get when you are asleep. It is a conscious and willful way to put your body asleep, while your mind is awake.
When you do it is a matter of choice. I mostly do mine whenever I have a little too much stress or pain, such as when I'm at the doctors. My fav is to think of a serene pond with early morning mist rising gently off the surface.
Of course, I also do it at night, but if I fall asleep, then I'm not meditating. I am only relaxing so that I can fall asleep.

Good question!
I'm pretty new at meditation, but I really like to do it at night. Not because I think I would be too tired if I did it in the morning, but I really like getting centered and calm before bed.
Enjoy!

depends on the medication... some cause drowsiness and should be taken at night.. others can cause excitablity and should be taken during the day. When i started birth control pills, they upset my stomach a little.. my doctor told me to take them before bed so that the upset stomach would happen while i was sleeping and wouldnt bother me as much.. it worked for me.

I prefer to do Zen, and I sit in the morning.
If you are interested in Zen; I posted a zen brochure I wrote to my blog on "my 360 profile" January 8th,

Anytime you can get to it is great, you do it right before bed, you sleep better. Before the day, you are more centered and relaxed. It shouldn't drain you, if it does, you probably need more sleep.
