I don`t know of any other countries but America that does this.
I`m Norwegian, and know for sure we don`t do it here... and the other countries I have been to haven`t done it either, at least I haven`t heard about it or seen it.
The only place I`ve seen people pledge alliegence to a flag is in America when I was there as an exchange student back in high school.

Well,
Then you missed the opportunity to step up to the plate as a patriot in your college class. It is not brainwashing. If you want to understand what brainwashing truly is, walk over to the library and look up the declassified documents on project ultraviolet. That was brainwashing. Do they not even teach word definitions in college anymore? Government students would benefit hanging with communication students.
It is an expression of nationalism. It is a desire to teach the students that America is a great nation worth fighting for, killing for, and dying for.
Most nations do not pledge to a flag. Most nations that require a pledge pledge to a specific person in power at that time. We pleadge to the flag and the republic, which endure longer than any one person. In a government of the people, for the people, and by the people, symbols of unity and national identification are necessary.
Brainwashing is an active attempt to alter the very fabric of memory, world view, and conceptions of individual reality as relates to conceptual and social reality. Please, if you are going to use a technological term, use it correctly.

I don't think so. But then again, no other country is as great as the USA.
And if you think loving your country is brainwashing, I think you should leave. Freedom of speech should have its limits.
