giving aid to third world countries is a moral obligation to all that can afford it but we should look after our own backyard first. even though we are rich we still have homeless uneducated people living within our own borders and a lot of those people have gone to war and risked their lives for us. they deserve our gratitude as well as support before anyone else.

Yes and No. My teacher made us read "The Scarlet Ibis" and it demonstrated the strong should always help the weak BUT look at New Orleans and our country.
YES we should continue to help other countries especially because half of them if not all of them hate us for how we handled 9/11 etc... BUT more importantly it's being a good nation to help others. If you are in the position to help THEN Do It!!!
NO we shouldn't over do it when New Orleans and other parts of America are suffering. I think Oprah made a wise decision by setting up schools. Also they said by giving girls the main education means they will bring that education to their families and if they earn money they will make sure their family has food etc... (I'm not sure the full details this is what my Aunt said and it's geared toward girls ?biased? I don't think so, but other people do) I do agree bringing a good education systems is a great approach BUT if you're starving food is the main priority.

We (America, or whatever country your from) should never give a country any money unless it backs our interests, such as cheapening oil, providing strategical alliances or the like. If a country is under-developed and has a decent government and is not war stricken, private out-sourcing will pump American money into their economy. Any country that can offer it's citizens protection while providing limited taxes will attract a large business's to set up shop, employing the citizens on a low but livable wage. Eventually the country's standards of living will increase as will the living wage.
If the government is shitty, like Cuba for example, no amount of money will help them in the long-term. Their socialist system wards away any sort of entrepreneurship.

Education is the best thing I feel. Teach the people to grow there own food, then no more help is needed.
I get frustrated when we give these countries all this money only to get bad mouthed by the same citizens of that country. I feel it would be quite entertaining to publicize (I am sure somewhere there is a detailed report of how much each country owes us) how much money all these countries owe us when they are bad mouthing us....
Why shouldn't Americans feel superior to other countries when our money helps there country to survive...
This is relating to another country's citizen bad mouthing Americans here in answers yesterday.
Educating would be far better then just handing over money as we do.

Giving aid is a moral obligation that prosperous countries should engage. Money unfortunately usually ends up in the hands of a corrupt government. Support has to go directly to the people themselves. Just providing food is not enough. They need to be taught how to provide for themselves. That is the only way to insure a succesfull future.

we should only give them money on many conditions which should be checked year by year...that is full implementation of a secular democracy and the rule of law, development of the free market system and so on, and if they start to drag their feet the money should stop flowing, they will get back into line real quick that way
