From a Yahoo News story:

"Millions of Americans who earn the minimum wage have been waiting a decade for a much-deserved raise," said Rep. Rahm Emanuel (news, bio, voting record), an Illinois Democrat. "Incredibly, Senate Republicans would have them wait even longer."

Fewer than 500,000 people make minimum wage, according to the same story. And most of those are high school kids working part-time.

Why do Dems act like they are helping the poor out with this? It is such a PR bill it's not even funny.

Minnimum wage is not a livable amount anymore. with inflation, especially the prices of gasoline and utility prices, necessities, not luxuries, can't be afforded...unfortunately what the supporters of raising the minimum wage fail to realize is that raising it won't help them because business' will just pass the cost of the increase on to their customers thus raising inflation even more, the ones who are really hurt are the people that are making only slightly more than minimum wage now, their wages certainly won't go up, atleast not immediately, and the price increases caused by the hike is going to seriously hurt them. Not to mention all the business' that will simply move to another country or fold altogether.

Another important tid bit, that each state can set it's own minimum wage, seperate from the federal government. I know at least 1 state that the minimum wage is already higher than the proposed federal increase. AND - it is a republican governor that pushed it through the state... Take a look at the link below. It list all the states!

Dems just need something to down the Republicans, and since they can't find anything real they make it up as they go...

What I have never understood is why the poorest among us have the most children. How can they bring children into this world knowing they cannot support them on minimum wage and want the rest of us to support their children. Minimum wage is not much that's for sure but I have seen people live, save, buy a home, a car, get an eduction while making only minimum wage.
These people only had 1 child not 1/2 a dozen. Children are joys to Mother's and Father's. Why should other people have to pay for their joys.

Studies have shown that minimum wage increases harm those who need the jobs the most - the unskilled and undereducated. Because it is these people who are not worth the additional costs.

And when labor costs are increased by over 30%, costs will have to increase accordingly, or payrolls will have to be shortened.

I expect there to be an large expansion of self-check outs at stores after this, and a reduction in staff.

The idea is that by raising the minimum wage you 'raise the tide' of all other low paying jobs. Here in Texas a place called Bill miller's Bar-B-Que pays 7.50 an hour and works you like a dog because they feel like you're being paid enough, we can push you as fast as you can possibly go and cut you immedieately when they even begin to slack off buisness wise.

Anyways, I think it's just common sense to raise the minimum wage with inflation.

Aren't devout christians supposed to care about the poor, the homeless, the outcasts? Not take advantage of them? Not sweep them under the rug?

Yeah, minimum wage increases will bring the end of civilization as we know it.

And HELLOOO?
Having one state with a lower min. wage WILL take the buisness away from other states! That's why we need a FEDERAL minimum wage law that insures greedy buisnesses aren't punishing the states trying to do what's right instead of what turns a trick, I mean profit.

Jesus, since when has Yahoo Answers been over run by cold, heartless conservatives?

That's like asking why Republicans think they are helping small businesses by giving more and more tax breaks. Oh yeah, that includes the 8 billion dollars in additional tax breaks Senate Republicans would need to pass the minimum wage bill.
Your such a selfish liar. You know very well that the minimum wage hike would help the poor. Your incredibly stupid if you believe that you can convince me of your outrageous lie.
Your a piece of sh!t.

Dems don't care about the poor. They care about destroying capitalism.

Just like they really don't care about the environment or global warming. Follow the money and everything they 'care' about takes money from business when they win.

Union wages are indexed on the minimum wage. The unions wanted this. Unions are what? Anti capitalist. They will move in and bleed an industry dry and then cry for the reporters who use the laid off workers as pawns in their anti American media stories.

You're correct. Minimum wage is a harmful, destructive, Socialist law that is in complete violation of the Constitution.

We now have a great economy, and unemployment is at a low. The Democrats will change all this, and their moronic minimum wage increases are going to cause widespread unemployment and skyrocketing inflation. This could be the worst since the depression.

The inmates have now seized control of the asylum and the American people are going to pay, sadly.

I have had an ongoing $500 reward for anyone who can say why it should be legal for a law to exist that prevents consenting adults to enter into a private agreement concerning legal work, and not be able to establish the amount of wages according to what is mutually agreeable between them.

Now, instead of anyone giving thumbs down, please post your response and step forward to collect your $500 reward.
