If you already sent them in, you need to redo your taxes, and send in an "Amended" return.

What you claim on your W4 and what you claim on your tax return do not have to match. BUT - because the government thought you were providing for kids - they took less money out of your check. Now when you DON'T claim them - you will probably end up owing more taxes - or at least get less money back.

I don't know if you are married to their father or not. But if you're split - whoever has the kids more than 50% of the time gets to claim them. It really does make a difference money-wise, so if it's you're right to claim them - do it.

You're claiming them on the W-4 only effects the amount withheld from your paycheck for taxes. The more dependents you claim, the less that is taken from your check. If you do not claim the dependents on your taxes you will owe the difference between the amount that you should pay as a single person versus a person with children.
So if you had $200 withheld for a person with kids, and a your taxes for aperson without kids is $400 then you owe $200 in taxes.
