Easiest, rocking up and down on each corner of the car. If the car moves up and down fairly easy, you can get it going faster and faster, and after you stop it keeps going more then twice they are bad.
The front of the car dips badly when you try to stop
The car bobs up and down after going over a bump
Thumping or knocking when going over bumps.
Look for wetness on the shocks.
Or just have them checked at a place like midas mufflers or pep boys.

A shock absorber is a limiting device that collects the impact of wheel bounce. It does it with hydraulic cushioning. A piston pushes a small amount of oil around and through a hole to release pressure slowly. That is what keeps the wheel on the road.
To test a shock absorber simply push down on each corner of your car and release it as fast as possible.
If good, the car should come back up slowly. If bad it will return as fast as you release it.
Another way is to push it down hard several times to get it to bounce. If you succeed in bouncing any corner.........that shock is bad.

Push up and down on each corner of the car. See if continues to move (bounce)after you let go of it. 2nd way look at the shocks if they are leaking oil, they will look wet.

You bottom out on simple bumps or inclines. You hear/feel a "thud" or "thunk" on these little bumps and even worse on potholes or curbs.
