I am rebuilding a fast Ford engine in the kitchen, unfortunately my family keep complaining about the smell of the oil etc, even though I wiped down the draining board, I can't get rid of the smell of overheated oil. I don't mind, I am rather used to it and quite like it but the others are grumbling and saying that all the food tastes of it!
I do not have sufficiently clean environment in the shed or garage, and I need to build this engine almost to hospital standards of cleanliness (dust wise that is, don't care about MRSA and that stuff)

Clean up your shed and do it out there - your family needs a kitchen that is only used for food preparation. The health inspectors wouldn't allow that in a roadside cafe, so why should you do this to your family. Also, oil and degreasant probably contain all kinds of chemicals that pose a cancer risk if ingested - especially when heated. put your own and your loved ones' safety before your car obsession.

Buy a bunch of carbon odor absorbers. Best one is a product called FRIDGE IT sold in kitchen sections at stores like walmart and linens and things. It's a little purple cube with an incredible carbon filter inside. Totally fragrance free - just eliminates odors and really works. Probably need a few of them around your work area. I think you can also buy direct. Look up FRIDGE IT on internet

You could try to use some products that are supposed to eliminate odors like Febreze Air Effects and Oust Air Freshener. They may work. Oil smells from engines are pretty strong, so these products may or may not work. Just buy a can of one of them and try it. It couldn't hurt!

lol and what about the fact that the kitchen is for preparing and cooking food lol....i would go bonkers if you did that in my kitchen!
When u say that you have wiped it down have you used bleach or anything like that??
Heres a few tips:

Hot water, with some white vinegar and lemon juice...this will break through the oil that is left behind....some cleaners dont break down oil that well!....
Do u really have to do this in the kitchen its disgusting??

You will probably need to use a product containing enzymes which literally eats the oil and grease. We've used one of theses prodcuts and you can get it from Technochem UK on 0114 220 2220

Ozium - available at Wal-Mart. or on line. It is not to be used as an air freshener, but an air purifier. One spray, which will dissipate quickly. Ozium is used in hospitals and nursing homes. I highly recommend its use- it will do the trick- it is an aerosol, however ...but used in quick, short sprays

I find Domestos kills all smells in kitchen and de-greases. Other than that use a strong disinfectant.
