Each party nominates who ever they think is their most viable candidate and they run. Others outside the major parties can also run but they are not given the same financial support so are at a huge disadvantage.

The Supreme Council of Mullahs looks over a list of possible candidates and then chooses 100.
Simon, Paula and the black guy then interview these 100 and usually choose the 7.
Those 7 are narrowed down to 2 over the next 10 weeks by phone calls from citizens.
The two that are left pick their VP candidates then a mysterious Cabal known as the electoral college then choose our President!

Each political party selects a candidate through primaries, those candidates then compete in the election. Honestly, to run for president you just have to get so many signatures and submit some paperwork to some election commission to get on the ballot, but if you want to win.....
