Does anyone know/remember why it's common not to get a period after a few months of the IUD placement? Is it b/c the hormones are localized in the uterus instead of all over like when taking the pill?

If you don't get a period anymore, did it freak you out at first even though you were told it's common?

I LOVE not having it but it's weird. I keep checking and the IUD in there so it's not like it came out. It's been since November or so without a period. I got the IUD in June.

It must be different for every person b/c I still had my periods when I had the Mirena IUD. (In the past I had the Depo shot and didn't have a period at all.)

I suppose the Mirena is good for some people but it was a horrible experience for me. I had horrible cramps and got an infection from it and had it removed. My doctor swore it would not cause weight gain but as soon as I had it removed, I lost all the weight I had gained when I had it (and did nothing differently).

It is VERY common with the Mirena IUD. Check the Manufacturers website or talk with your GYN/Midwife. I wouldn't be concerned because it is so common but it would still be good to talk with your healthcare provider. Mirena advertises little or no period. It's because of the hormone that is transferred to your body by the IUD.

Return to your health care provider or facility or go to a hospital immediately if you have any of the warning signs listed below. IUD users are at increased risk of infection in the uterus for the first month after insertion, so watch closely for warning signs during that time. Be sure to tell the health care provider that you are using an IUD for contraception. Warning signs include:

Late period or other signs of pregnancy.

Bleeding or spotting between periods or after intercourse that either continues beyond 3-6 months after insertion or that starts a few months after insertion.

Severe pain in your belly.

Pain during intercourse.

Unusual discharge from your vagina.

Fever and/or chills

You notice a missing string, or a shorter or longer string.

You can feel the hard part of the IUD in your vagina or at your cervix when checking for the strings

go see you doctor..

This is normal, It is working correctly for you, I had the mirena coil inserted because of my very heavy periods and with me it did not work, I still had the heavy periods after 10months so the doctor decided I had to have a hysterectomy. I had it done 2 months ago and the age of 38. The doctor told me that I was one of the unlucky ones. Usually it works well for most women. Once you have it inserted after a few months the periods should dissappear and this is what has happened with you so don't worry it is going well for you. Good Luck

The levonorgestrel in Mirena reduces the monthly thickening of the lining of your uterus
Less thickening means less menstrual flow
Eventually your menstrual flow may stop completely

I have Mirena and love it! I was obsessed with checking the strings at first. I have 5 kids and do not want any more. Now I only check it once a month.

nina had an unusual experience. mirena is not associated with weight gain. infection is a known complication but is relatively rare. you dont have a period because the hormone thins out the lining of your uterus. some people continue to have periods but they are extremely light, most women do not have periods with mirena. i am a gynecologist who recommends mirena often and i use it myself also. my patients love it for the most part, i still have periods but a bit of light spotting every few months is much much better than bleeding heavy for 8 days every 3 weeks.

It's very common. My five years will up in May and I haven't had one in about 3 and a half years. You get used to it, and yes, it is awesome.
