NO, I love GM, but their problem is the keep refinancing their debt. Also look at how many products GM has, they have about 6-10 different cars under a bunch of other brand names (Chevy, Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, GMC, Hummer). Out of all those brands they are constantly competing with their own products. Each brand has suv's that are nearly the same that compete with each. It would be more efficient to do like toyota and honda and have a brand for their normal cars and then a luxury brand. Each of those brands has a handful of cars instead of 100 different cars.

No, I think that would start a mega-firm that would then have little or no competition. There are few car companies left that are not merged with another car manufacturer.
What is there to save in American automobiles, some of the best on the streets today are built by American manufacturers (mabye not built in the USA, but by one of the big 3)
Back in the early 1980's everybody thought all 3 were going under due to the junk they were trying to sell. Today their products rival that made anywhere else on the planet.

If GM, Ford and Chrysler merged we would once again have American Motors. American Motors used to make Rambler and AMC. Some models included the Matador. Gremlin and Pacer.
American Motors used a comination of parts from all of the three top car manufactures to build thier cars. AHH, the old days!

"save" the American automobile? From what, competition? I don't think so. The Daimler/Chrysler merger has done nothing for Mercedes Benz in terms of quality. They have adopted the mass market strategy and Mercedes quality has suffered. While the high-end cars have managed to remain reasonably reliable, the entry-level cars are junk. I see no long-term benefit to Mercedes. Chrysler has seen improvement in terms of engineering and development though. But overall they have managed to compromise Mercedes while only slightly raising the mark at Chrysler.

I don't think a merge is the answer but I do think if they stop the greed and price new cars fairly they could rebound. Notice how many TV Ad's are for vehicles and Look at how dealerships purchase large tracks of land for big warehouse mega malls. They spend millions to sell you over-priced transportation.Where does the $$$ come from to fund this excess?? Well they build a car for $3000 and sell it to us for $30,000. I honestly think they have hit the ceiling and priced the middle class out of the New vehicle market.People who pay more than $15,000 for a car may as well flush that cash down the drain because you were just had....Big Time

3 dropping companies, merging does no longer help issues any. Their loses purely get larger. maximum situations whilst 2 or greater losers merge issues do worsen. a recent occasion is two radio stations, XM and Sirius. Their merged inventory is now approximately 15 cents a proportion. additionally the yank companies merging does no longer help something because of the fact the jap opposition is powerful.

They are still capable of saving themselves. The problem is that Detroit believes more in short term profits than they do in long term profits. They got the message in the 70's and everyone came around except American Motors. They got sloppy and then GW Bush laid a rotten egg on their doorsteps. Merging them together would just create an even bigger mess than they already have.

Yes I do but the fallout would be a big impact on the employment rate. Thousands would lose their jobs but the North American automobile would survive in a better state.
Can you imagine the hybrid they would produce? That would be like mating a Stafford shire with a Newfoundland dog.
