I am a qualified motorcycle training instructor and the answer is as follows:
At 16 you will have category 'P' on your provisional license anf this entitles you to ride up to a 50cc MOPED restricted to 31mph - this is subject to successful completeion of a CBT course (compulsory basic training).
At 17 you get category 'A' provisional entitlement which entitles you to ride up to a 125cc motorcycle, again on completion of a CBT. If you choose to do your test on a 125 you can then ride any size bike but must restrict it to 33bhp for 2 yrs (all this means is your top end will be crap... you'll still get past 70 at about the same rate!)
At 21 you are entitled to take your full test on a 'large' bike (above 33bhp) and are non-restricted permanently.
If you can, do your test before 2008 as it is getting harder then!
If you pass on a 125 at even 18yrs old you are completely non-restricted at 20 so whats the point in waiting!
As for getting a license, pick up the relevant application form from the post office, fill it in and get it counter-signed and send it off to the DVLA and they'll send you a license!
Someone mentioned you can't fail a CBT... this is true but if you don't meet a required safe standard you will be asked to return until you are safe, and remember your license isn't valid without your CBT cert!
MAKE SURE YOU READ A HIGHWAY CODE... LACK OF KNOWLEDGE CAN MAKE YOU NEED TO COME BACK!
Hope this helps!!

At 16 you do a CBT and can ride up to 50cc bike.
At 17 you can do a CBT and ride a 125cc bike. (12bhp)
At 17 you can do your full test (after doing a CBT) and be restricted to a bike of 33bhp. Not much.
At 21 you can do your Full test (After doing a CBT) and ride anything.
CBT is a day of training. You get supplied with everything you need, helmet, gloves and bright coat and borrow a training school's bike or moped. It costs about £70-90 depending on location and you can't fail.
At 16 you can get your provisional licence for bikes, valid for 2 years but if you haven't done your test by the age of 18, your provisional will be suspended for a year. Most people ignore this, and in fact don't even know this.

well you can drive a 50cc motorcycle at the age of 16 without taking a test but you do need to complete a CBT which is a compulsary basic training which costs about 90-100 quid, to do this you must have a provisional license which i think is about 38 quid, so ye 16 for a 50cc but the CBT even though is a test can still be failed as i found out :( gutted i had to dish out another 100quid. well hope this helps x

Latvia is a member of the EU. Your partner can do the motorbike driving test in Latvian in Latvia. In the UK the test questions will always be in English, but you can have an interpreter in the test who would translate into your language of choice.

16 - to get a licence you apply for it on a licence application form, its slightly quicker than just waiting for it to happen.

rather depends on the size of the machine, a 50cc moped is 16, but to go bigger than that you have to be older
