Well, in the end, the British (along with Allied forces) defeated the Germans (part of the Axis). The British suffered horrible casualties along the way.

Most of us in the USA have a bad sense of what happened in World War II. When you have the time and inclination, you should read up on the major engagements (Stalingrad, North Africa, Pearl Harbor, Midway, Rostov on the Don, Italian invasion, D-Day, and so many more...).
I think you will find that the British were dangerously close to being beaten by Germany except for the stupidity of Hitler in attacking the Soviet Union before completeing and implementing his plan to invade England. However, since Germany did invade the Soviet Union and failed miserably (losing literally millions on men in the process) England was able to regroup and with the help of the United States open several new battle fronts that tied up a lot of German men and material. While that was happening, the Soviets took the lead in actually defeating (crushing, destroying) Hiter's Third Reich.
My summary: England fought alone for many years before the U.S and USSR got involved. Just by surviving and perservering in the face of terrible odds, was a defeat in principle for Germany. No other nation in the world was able to stand up to Hitler's domination the way tiny little England did.
Militarily, the Soviets took the lead in defeating Germany. The U.S. took the lead in defeating Japan. Many other nations made tremendous contributions and suffered terrible losses. It is all good reading and gives much insight into why we are the way we are politically and economically.
I encourage you to find out more than just who beat who.
