Usually the big companies offer great benefits. If you're over 30 and health care insurance is an issue, you can't beat big companies. And even they are trimming insurance benefits.
But the salaries are low and there's no guarantee you'll get promoted. There's alot to be said for opening your own business, however, I read that you'll work more doing that than you'll ever work in your life. But you have control, pride of ownership, etc. Check out some books on starting your own business. Go to the library. Then decide which option is right for you.
My cousin has his own business and is very successful. I don't know what he does for health insurance though, we never discuss it.

That is such a vague question it's ridiculous. Working for a Fortune 500 company doesn't imply in the least bit that you will have a secure job (even if it's a stable company), or a better than average salary, but starting your own business is far from a guarantee as well. Some 80% of all businesses fail within the first few years. There is usually a lot of upfront capital required to start your own business depending on what you want to do, plus you'll have to pay your own health insurance and more (not to say that all companies will pay for it either). You have to figure out what you want.

Fortune 500 companies can give you benefits, overtime and great references on your resume once they lay your a ss off. Entrepreneurship is the only way, especially for young African-American women like ourselves who will always, in some way feel not part of the team .
Entrepreneurship will eventually provide you with financial freedom as well as confidence. You'll also have the drive and means to tackle any dreams you presently have or will have in the future.
Go for it honey! If you don't believe in yourself...NO ONE WILL!

I find the instability of our large corporations the last few years as a risk to the person who wants to work themselves to the top over a period of years. You have to consider whether you want to go to all the hassle of just being a number, buy outs, downsizing etc. as these big corporations don't thing twice about throwing you to the alligators. In my opinion if you are young enough try it on your own. If it doesn't work out you won't have after thoughts.
