BMW is a trade made abbreviation For Bavarian Motor Works.
This company originally made airplane motors for the German Defense department during WWI. The treaty at the end of the war forbid the manufacture of war machines. So BMW started to make motorcycles using the same engines. Later they moved into making cars.
They are known for sports car type handling and are considered a luxury car.
