It is the American way of doing things, let the poor working people pay for everything, and if they get sick- well then they are dead weight so let them die!

Are you saying better health CARE or better health PAYMENTS? Don't imagine the care is all that great; which doctors, dentists and other professionals accept jobs in the prison system? Would you guess it was the more competent, or the less?

The problem with health care someone else pays for is the loss of control over quality, and over decisions which affect the patient. And now we have the fact that so much of health care is paid by government entities that they have a significant distorting effect on prices. I remember, for example, when I was working for an insurance attorney who had to settle a case regarding a child who was on Medi-Cal. The hospital bills the full (outrageous) dollar figure to everyone, insured and uninsured. But look what happens to the bill after that. If it's paid in cash by the uninsured, it gets discounted heavily. If it's paid (even after some delay) by an insurance company, it is also heavily discounted. Who pays full price? The government entity responsible for paying for the poor. And believe me, the differences are startling.

Remember who pays for it does not control how good the quality of any product or service is UNLESS the one receiving the product or service has complete authority over the payment. In general, if you are writing the check, and making the choices, you will receive better care than if someone else who only gets a bill (where things are itemized you may not even have received) is the one who pays. But insurance companies negotiate discounts; the government does not.

That's because we as society have taken responsibility for them once they are incarcerated. As a capitalistic society, we do not take responsibility for individual citizens. I don't agree with the situation, but then again, I think we have too many people in prison. I think when I get old and can't work anymore I'll try and get imprisoned so someone can take care of me. ;->

You are 100% correct. Criminals also have better legal council, nutrition, and free cable TV to boot.

I say it's time we let "Cool Hand Luke" be the future of all prisons.

They don't have better health care than "most" Americans. They have better than some because of 2 reasons.

1. The people they have better health care than are lazy and don't wanna persue a better job with better benefits if they have any job at all.

2. The liberals would scream bloody murder if we didn't cater to every stubbed toe and splinter an inmate had. They would call it cruel and unusual punishment. Ask them.
