A Republic is a form of government which does not have an inherited head of state (a monarchy); and in which the head of state and the government representatives are chosen by the people -- either directly or indirectly.
A "democracy" has nothing to do with the FORM of government but is a state where the government, whatever its form, generally represents the desires of its people, usually expressed thru elections. The definition of "democracy" has changed over the years. Originally a "democracy" was any government directly controlled by the people - as in Athenian Greece. Later as countries became too large to be directly governed a "democracy" was expanded to include one in which representatives elected by the people (such as the US) set policy. These days most people define a "democracy" as one in which governments are elected by the majority of all citizens in free election; in which government officials are governed by fixed laws; and in which certain core individual rights are respected by the government.
A democracy can be a republic (like Germany or the US) or a monarchy (like Great Britain or Denmark). A republic can be a democracy or a dictatorship like Cuba or North Korea.

In a "democracy" the people make the laws. In a republican form of government their "representatives" do. There is no Democracy, and no-one represents me. Both words are lies to get peoples support. Not descriptive to tell the truth.

A Republic (more or less what the U.S. has evolved into) is representative form of government - where elected senators and representatives vote and decide for us.
A true democracy who have the public more involved by voting on every issue we face. The downside, is that public policy, laws, etc. would sway with public opinion and whim (much arguably like the Clinton administration - that was why he was "popular" - he presidied with public opinion to guide his decisions)

hello!
These are two different terms, first come the republic as a form of government after gaining independence from any other ruling power like for example :a King,Emperor, dictator,or any another ruler.
Then once this goal is achieved the people elect a government who you could name republican or Democrat, Green or Conservative
or independent according to the party affiliation.
The word democrat means :Gov.by the people from the people for the people.
Thanks for asking.
