No, iTunes does not need to be open.

The first thing you should do is try a different USB port on your computer. Make sure you're using a USB port on your computer and not a USB hub or on you keyboard or anything like that. iPod's need high power USB ports to charge. The ports that are on some keyboards and some USB hubs are low power ports.

If that doesn't work, go here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60941
It is Apple Support's page on what to do if your iPod won't charge. Apple probably has the best tech support site in the business. You should be able to find your answer there.

yes its right i also have a ipod.it does charge when you plug into the computer.the usb cord which is supplied with the ipod have to be used to plug the ipod in the usb part. Now sometimes it does happen that the usb slot is not workin of your computer. As per my knowledge you should have more than one usb in your computer or laptop(depends on what your using),try in some other slot. Now one more thing if it doesnt work at all on your comp try connecting to your friends comp cuz maybe there is a bit of electricity fuctuations in your comp.Well if it yet doesnt work you need to show it to your supplier. If there is defect hell definately change it.Maybe there is a bit prob with your cord.Check soon or else the ipod wont work.I hope this solves your problem.:) if not and you need further help u can always mail me on sshaheens86@yahoo.com.i know how ti feels when electronics dont work bye tc

The iPod should recharge as it is plugged into the USB cable that came with the unit. If it is not charging, it is possible the cable was not inserted completely into the iPod. You should see some symbol that indicates it is charging on the screen. If it still fails to charge, and the cable is inserted correctly, make an appointment at you local Apple store to have one of the customer service people look at it at the Genius Bar. It is a great service and they generally don't hesitate to replace your unit if it is defective and still under warranty.

This is the only thing I hate about my iPod...

I'm pretty sure that it does need to be open. Also update itunes to the lastest version. Actually I beleive that itunes is supposed to automatically open once you plug it in.

If this fails; try a different USB port.

What I did to avoid this mess is bought an adapter that you can plug into the wall.

I have an ipod and you need to plug it into the USB cord in the front of your computer (if you have a newer model) and in the back if its older. But first you have to turn the computer on. The comptuer has to be on for the ipod to charge. Hope this helps. p.s. and you need to register your ipod with itunes. works better

I bought my son one for Christmas as well. I just plugged it into my computer and it did charge. Make sure your computer is on. Also, replug the connections in to make sure they are in right. You might want to also restart your computer w/ the iPod already attached to make sure your computer is recognizing that is attached. Hope this helps.

Hiya! Well, you can buy chargers from various places, even e-bay, but when i got mine, i downloaded i-tunes, and then connected it to my computer, is the computer recognising the i-pod is connected, if not the cable that connects the i-pod to the computer may be at fault. If you do have i-tunes already installed it shouldnt matter if your 'in' i-tunes....whatever you do...dont try and get through to apple coz they are hopeless. Hope this helps!
