last summer i was 'bucked' off of my riding tractor. i hit something and it threw me off, i landed hard on the ground, got up and ran after it to stop it.(because it's old, and doesn't stop on it's own) got it stopped, then looked around to see if anyone saw me......
never mind that i busted up my ankle, i was more worried about my pride....
why do we do this, does anyone know?
lots of people do it when they trip, or something like that.

I walked off a two story scaffold, right into a pile of sand.I quickly got on my feet.Wiping the sand off,I glanced around to see if any one saw me.Luckily nobody did,but I was prepared to limp if I had been seen.Sympathy

I think it comes from early childhood experiences. I remember goofing up as a youngster and getting laughed at. I think it's common for most kids to have at least one public humiliating experience, and of course since kids arn't exactly all that mature, they WILL laugh at it.
Most adult will ignore others mistakes, of course, but we will never ever forget those few time as a child that we got laughed at by a whole group of kids. That, in my opinion, is why we are always looking to make sure no one is watching our goofs. It's practically instinctive.

i always wonder if i flashed on my way down or something! I think its all about not wanting to feel stupid because u used poor jugement. I think its about what u think and feel yourself. U felt silly and wanted to make sure nobody else saw your 'stupidity'. When in your case anyone watching would have been worried about your safety not your ego.

defiantly pride. Everything is worse when someone else sees. If no one sees then we can make up a cool story of how we got our injuries...
