Define "old".
Naturally... there is a point at which women go through menopause. After menopause, a woman no longer ovulates, so she won't get pregnant. (I believe most women go through menopause sometime in their 40s. My mother had her last child naturally at age 41.)
With a doctor's help, a woman can get pregnant after menopause. There was a story this past December about a woman in Spain giving birth at age 67. (I'll keep my opinions about that to myself).

Naturally they can't because once a woman goes through menopause (usually in their 40's or 50's) they stop having a menstrual cycle. Ovulation is required for a woman to conceive, but once the menstrual cycle stops, so does the ovulation.
There have been cases of older women getting pregnant through IVF (invitro fertilization), which does not require a woman to ovulate because an already fertilized egg is implanted in the woman's uterus.
Pregnancy puts physical demands on a woman's body, so as women get older, their bodies really aren't suited for pregnancy any longer.

well the answer lies in the female physiology and anatomy. As the female body grows older, the uterus and body are less conducive to hold and grow a fetus. Plus the fact that as you have more menstrual cycle throughout ur lifetime, the eggs that your ovary produce are less fertile/less likely to be fertilised than when u were younger (thats why people call at 20 plus when ur biological clock starts to tick. It somewhat refers to the best time to conceive).
Also dearie..as female gets older, the body is more likely to be prone to mutation or any other disorder that will affect the growth of the baby itself. Thats why older woman are relatively more likely to have a Down-syndrome baby than a younger one coz the additional chromosome happens when the cells divide abnormally due to the body's 'old' cell.
Another thing..of course, as the woman gets older, she has her menopause and well..no more menstrual cycle. No period means no more eggs produced to be fertilized and well..no pregnancy.
However, once in a while u hear news of old woman becoming pregnant..n u know what..thts just a miracle and that person is very lucky!hehe..
i tried to be as simple as i can..hope tht helps!

Well their eggs get old and their bodys can't carry a baby. Most women go into menopause and they either don't ovulate or they end up having to get a histerectamy.

Actually, thanks to IVF, they can.
I just wrote an article on the topic. You can read it here:
