My PC comes on of its own accord and after a short while goes off without completing the booting process. It has been running fine until a few days ago that it started acting this funny.
What can be the problem here and how can it be solved?

you can strike f8 several times just before booting the system and go to safe mode and try to see what went wrong with your computer.

You need to view your system logs to find out what the error is that is causing the shutdown and restart.

Go to "Start"
Click on "Control Panel"
Select and double click "Administrative Tools"
Select and double click the "Event Viewer" icon.
In the right hand pane double click "System"
This will display entries that your system makes during normal operation.
There are three types of entries. The ones in red denote critical stop errors. You will see a column that indicates the time that these events took place. You can right click on any of these events and select properties to get a detailed description of what took place on any of these events.

Click on the critical stop error that took place at the time your system shut down, and select properties for that event. In the box that appears it is possible to get more information from the internet if the box doesn't give enough information. Many of these events will take you to Microsft.com and will describe the error in detail. It will usually give instructions on steps to take to correct these errors also.

This log should have all the events that are taking place with your system and should indicate why it is starting on its own.
