I've been writing fiction since I was a child, I finally have two novels completed & would prefer to find a publisher instead of self publishing, how do I start the process?

Virtually all books contracted by publishers these days come via literary agents. Some publishers still accept unsolisited manuscripts but getting something published off the slush pile is very VERY unlikely.

To find out more about agents check out

Most agents vary in what they want to receive from an unknown author. Some just want a brief bio and a sample chapter to look at, some will accept your entire manuscript for consideration - it is best to contact them first or check their websites to find out.

Watch out for agents that charge a readers fee. There are a few legitimate agencys that charge a fee for their readers reports and advice but many are just fraudsters. Speak to other authors for recommendations. If you don't know any other authors, its important to build a support network. Think about joining a writers centre or course.

Good luck

If you're hoping to be published by a major publishing house, you'll need an agent. Your best bet is the AAR website, link below.

Otherwise, you need to get a current edition of Writer's Market and identify publishers who are seeking the type of writing similar to your novel.

Best wishes!

Worker: I have written and self published two books. It is a very hard row to hoe finding a publisher. An almost imposible task. This is why I was forced to self publish. I will give you a name and ask that you please let me know how you made out if you go this route. They are not into self publishing. They promise to get back to you in two days with your query and they do.
If they are interested they ask you to send them your manuscript by email. To my knowledge they are the only ones that work this way. All others want it sent by regular mail and believe me this takes up to three years to get an answer if you get one at all. After they check your manuscript they promise to get back in two weeks and again they do.
Go to your browser and type in New York Literary Agency and follow their instructions. Good luck and again, please let me know how you make out with this firm. Wayne, The Vagabond Writer
