Well, you can't officially become a recognized "trader" per se, but you can specialize in finding items and selling them to other traders who sell similar items (e.g. sell weapons to a smith, herbs to an apothecary, etc). To increase your mercantile points, there are trainers throughout the game who you can pay to increase your stats. Just find the trainers for Mercantile and, if you don't mind spending the coin, buy your way up to 100 points. Also, by haggling the price, your skill will increase.

By haggling/bartering with traders each time you buy/sell things. There's an option to haggle when you are looking at the traders wares. Set the slider up high and slowly move it back till you get a deal, I think.....I can't check to see if this works at the moment. I don't know if you can become a trader though as I haven't played it enough.

You have to go up to a merchant in their store and sell what they sell. Weapon seller you sell weapons, apothecary you sell apothecary, etc etc. You take up the haggle and go from there. Don't worry about going a few up from what you are allowed to do, just keep clicking sell and you will soon wear them down and they will sell, giving you more mercantile points for leveling up. Also sell what you don't want, as well. I sold a lot of those green leaves, I forget what they are called now, but I would sell them for 27 gold each to ingredient merchants all over the land. And it isn't a job, it just to get more money and your mercantile up.
