You would KNOW his name if you saw him in heaven!! (Great Guitarist Hon, around 70's start and still some today) Remember a story about a little boy falling out of an upper floor window to his death because the housekeeper left the window open?? Well Eric Clapton was that little boy's dad. And he subsequently wrote "Would You Know My Name" and you could check it out at Yahoo Music/whatever. Great Guitarist for the Baby Boomers!!! @8-)

Eric Clapton is a superb guitar player, once named "god" for his musical abilities. Eric joined two other superb musicians named Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker to form "The Cream" (which was later shortened to "Cream") - a power trio who blended blues with rock and beyond. The band did not have a long life, from its formation in 1966 to its breakup in November 1968. Clapton's Cream songs included 'Tales of Brave Ulysses', 'Sunshine of Your Love', and 'Strange Brew'.

The short answer is a guitar god and an enormous influence on rock music since the late 1960s. He's played a wide variety of styles including blues, psychedelic, raggae, acoustic, tinges of country, and straight-up rock'n'roll.
He is the first person to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times (as a member of Yard Birds, Cream, and as a solo artist.) He was a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Yard Birds, Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, and has appeared on countless albums by other artists.
Allmusic is an excellent source of information. They provide background, discography, appearances, and song clips.

He's a legendary Folk/Rock Singer.
He's English in Origin, and he's been inducted thrice into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame
He's nicked "Slowhand" and of course he was ranked 4th in Rolling Stone’s list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time and #53 on their list of the The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. And on that list, he was also listed the second greatest living guitarist, behind B.B. King.
If you need to know more, I'd say he was a Rock GOD

Well...he's a singer. Middle aged guy, who signs varying styles of music, but is mostly rooted in blues. He sang a very famous song, 'Tears in Heaven' about his son who was killed when he fell out of a window. He's also sung a lot of other well known songs, and is renwowned for beign one of the ebst and most influential guitarists ever, especially when it comes to classical guitar.
I think if you hear 'Tears in Heaven' you might recognise it, so i'll print the lyrics:
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you feel the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
cause I know I dont belong here in heaven...
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
Ill find my way through night and day
cause I know I just cant stay here in heaven...
Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please...begging please
Beyond the door theres peace Im sure
And I know therell be no more tears in heaven...
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you feel the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
cause I know I dont belong here in heaven...
