Now that it was proven that smoke cannot be controlled and that people in non-smoking areas were affected by secondary smoke travelling from smoking areas, won't this new proposed legislation discriminate against smokers?

I personally think that south africa wont eva be a smoke free country. Simple reason: to many people smoke and tabaco is a good money income, as far as I know some of the tabaco companies actually export tabaco to other countries. We plant tabaco on our farm, and it makes GOOD money!

Not a chance.
Due to the high taxation of tobacco, there is no way any government in the world would wish to put a complete stop to smoking - it simply delivers too much money into government coffers. Add that to the fact that many people seem to be so dependant on smoking and the chances of a "smoke-free" SA blows up in smoke, excuse the pun. :-)

I don't have a problem with smokers so long as they do it outside or in designated smoking areas. If places have proper extractor fans and divisions then I'm sure that the affect of second-hand smoke would be minimal.

I think that SA should concentrate on lowering the crime rate before they start worring about smokers . I am pretty sure more people die from crime everyday, than those who die of second hand smoke.
These smoking laws are literally a "smokescreen" for the government to ignore the real issues.
Are they seriously going to waste police on chasing errant smokers rather than have them in the places they are desperately needed everyday?

Just a little note. Having lived and travelled in Europe and China, I can easily say that South Africa is way advanced on the smoking fight - and so can safely leave this on one side for now and focus on crime. We have done well. In Germany you still smoke in shopping centre's everywhere, China anywhere over lunch, UK is just now thinking of smoke free pubs

I'm sorry, BUT I SUPPORT A NON-SMOKING COUNTRY

I think people who smoke are the most spiteful rudest people!!!

I mean, if I eat at work, people who smoke do not get up and smoke outside, and by the way, SMOKERS SMELLS HORRIBLE. I think it is disgusting!!!! I got sick from the smoke, my lungs are filled with poison I don't even want to inhale.... My sinuses are blocked because of the disgusting horrendous smelly smoke!!!

Sadly I don't think that South Africa will turn into a smoke-free place , maybe on the loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong run, but definitely not over night.

SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOU!!!!!!

honestly... No, Never! There is to much nicotine/tobacco-dependent people. It's a high income business, the government will loose money if they make it illegal, stop producing, exporting and loose tax money on smokes. one, way or another it will find it's way back into the country!
