I mean, does it really affect anybody apart from ethnic minorities? And how comes most of the people asking are not from an ethnic minority?

Obviously, everything has a debate around it. But you don't see much debate about sexism or disabled rights. What is the big deal about racism?

I think you answered your own question. It is simply a more debated topic. Not everyone see's sexism discrimination against the disabled, but all people have experienced racism at some point.

I sincerely hope people are seeking to understand themselves and their individual stance. With human rights has come self awareness plus individual rights within society - more transparency. Things that were once tacitly accepted as norm have been branded (rightly so) as either racist or discriminating and a people once resigned to "whatever" are now bravely speaking out with the backing of the law. Racism is not only white to black (although more commonly accepted just like sexual harassment was once believed to be a strictly man to woman "thing") but also black to white with the most absurd being the degree of skin "lightness" within the same race. The big deal with racism has it's roots in slavery which has never really been openly denounced and irrevocably accepted. The invasion and enslavement of indigenous tribes is still considered something to be proud about by historians and taught in our schools with a lot of kudos to the people and missionaries involved. There is a lot of blame, guilt and hurt surrounding this issue and it just wont go away however much we want it to. Sexism and Disability on the other hand affects all irrespective of colour or origin and therefor THERE IS NO PARTICULAR RACE TO BLAME OR SILENCE - IT IS A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM WE CAN ALL EASILY EMPATHIZE WITH.

I think George Bernard Shaw said it best, "If you have to introduce legislation in place of common sense, then there's something wrong with your education system."

Answers is all about learning through asking. The reason that racism crops up as a subject so often is because there's massive confusion out there, caused by a broken edu-ma-cashun system and the feeding frenzy of newspapers desperate to sell copy.

What Big Brother highlighted is this same confusion. Jade made some very unappropriate comments, but were they really racist? If you read what other people have to say on the subject, you'd think so. If you listen to what Jade actually had to say, in context, then it's a different call.

It is still pervasive in societies, indicating their own insecurities about themselves. The majority of people in the world are of color, the majority of the ruling class are not. Racism for the most part is about sustaining financial and societal superiority, using ethnicity and race as their crutch, often believing they are inferior or sub-human.

Racism and sexism are both mental illnesses. Those afflicted by it or color envy should seek counseling.

I can't decide whether your question is an oxymoron, or whether it is simply ironic. The Liberal chattering classes can't stop talking about racism (whatever it is). I think that it is a very divisive word, created by the lefties to help control the majority population by empowering ethnic minorities, usually supported by legislation. It is not in my lexicon of words.

Race is becoming less about equality and more about empowerment, both legally, financially and culturally. Meaning you can get yourself special treatment if you assert some kind of protected minority status. In other parts of the world, there's something called ethnic cleansing, which many Americans don't get.

Personal Insecurity! When all other arguments cannot help us to be secured we turned into racism. Insidentally, sexism is part of the equation!
