Edited to ask - If so then why? For products such as cosmetics I can see the logic; essentially it is the consumers vanity and/or insecurity that is being played on.

But with TV, which is not selling anything other than the story being told, why is it essential?

Could it not be the case that a certain culture as taken root that makes new film/tv makers hesitant to go against the norm of seeking the best looking actors?

I mean, if I had a lot of money invested in something then I would not want to risk it by going against the grain. I would just find sexy people because that is what others do.

Have there been any actual studies to show that beauty has an impact on the success of a program?

Of course they do!Their first care is to have beautiful actors & then if they can act! It's the people who attract your attention & you can either get glued to the programme thanks to them or the storyline. There are TV series that I gave them a try because of the lead actors.
You'll have to try harder to find ugly people on TV/cinema rather untalented! :)
