The router is the easiest way to do it - you can get one under $40 - it is more secure and easier to maintain then trying to setup a server with NAT and such. It's really not worth doing it any other way. If you wait for a good sale, you can get one for $20.

yes you can, just you need more than one connection like two lan cards.
first lan card you connect to internet lets call it A
the second you connect to a hub or lanswitch.
now go to network places, open network connections, right click on connection A, choose properties.
go to (advanced) tab
choose share connection with others.

now let other computers connected to you on connection B make their IP addresses automatic. and now every one have internet.

your windows is now working like a router, and a NAT server and DHCP server in the same time.

to really be a good sharer, run a local television or newspaper ad to advertise your philanthropy.
