Nettie it would have always have been debatable if Churchill would have made a good peacetime prime minister but as a wartime leader no one can ever surpass and his utterances have gone into history such as the" few" and other quotes and if he liked the sound of his voice so did thousand of others which brought us through the war, as for the motley crowd i see in parliament if you took 20 out they still would not measure up to one Great Man so where is the man to take his place in perhaps a coalition government next election

If you want to become active in politics you will find that there is a requirement to be able to stand up and talk confidently about a wide range of topics.

To get to the point where you are elected, you are going to have to this well.

Like most things, if you enjoy atask you will find that you do it better than say something you don't enjoy.

It is only logical that those who enjoy public speaking (and hence could be said to like the sound of their own voice) will tend to get to the top of the political tree.

As for Winston Churchill, well he could talk the hind legs off a pack animal if the opportunity or the need arose. Quite a number of his speeches for public consumption were heavy on the rhetoric. It was Churchill who invented the phrase Iron Curtain. It was also Churchill who used the "We will fight them on the beaches..." rhetoric after Dunkirk.

Rhetoric goes down well with the public. It creates a far better public image than detailed discussions of policy and will therefore get more votes.

First of all, Churchill had a full grasp of the times in which he lived. Never before that time had the world come to oblivion caused by dictators from the west and the east, all the way up to the time of the "Iron Curtain".

As for your question, most politicians have an air of supreme confidence. It's up to the voters to decide if that air is just hot air or not. Most do enjoy speaking. In fact, that could be a cause for global warming?? Too much hot air from Washington! As for "full of empty rhetoric", they say whatever the moneychangers want them to say.

The whole world is governed by theory of relativity. The Vision one has for purticular person or event, the other person may not have the same vision for the same. So if you say that "Winston Churchill" is Great, then I am to say Sorry. I am abusing or down grading The Powerfull person of that time.

Now I come to your question? We make politicians. YES. People make the Politicians. Politicians are not made by themselves. If people who vote for them are alert and mind their problems, then you wont find any politicians who do not listen to people. It is we who forget to remind the politician that "You are there because of US". But we are reminding them after the end of term.

My own view of this is that they are too media orientated these days. Every opportunity they have is taken to get in front of the public, its a bit like branding as you would a product.

That is of course until it all goes wrong.

But the contents of there public appearences and media press releases is full of quick or knee jerk reactions to situations to ipress the public that they are on the ball and doing something about every situation. Little thought goes into what they do unlike people of great statuer like Winston Churchilland therefore so much goes wrong or does not happen

Its not that difficult.
People who don't like the sound of their own voice seldom want to become politicians, while those who have genuinely intelligent things to say usually have something better to do with their lives.

Simple. They have no core values. Reagan was someone who spoke with purpose. Look how short his major speeches were. When Clinton had his State of the Union address, it would take an hour and a half.
