It pretty much depends with the eyes of the viewer or the eyes of the creator of a show or manga that is yaoi. Even though the term yaoi is just a simple man/man relationship which doesnt exceed to anything further other than that. There have been people that tend to bend this factor and make things more hardcore towards the genre. And when this aspect gets bent. It really makes a honest to true straight guy to think that its explicit or gross even if its hardcoreish or not. Even though i am a straight guy. I along with any average straight guy to agree with this. Except that i have seen some yaoi shojo anime like gravitation and decendents of darkness. And i really didnt find it explicit at all. Nor do i thnk its just a piece of art. Im more of a person thats interested in the story of it than art.

I, personally, see it as both, depending on the level of the actions. I 'prefere' it as an art, but, as with many fans of the genre, enjoy it partly because it is one of the few things that see a gay relationship as not only 'acceptable', but just as enjoyable to watch as a western romantic comedy. (Not to start an argument, but western 'lesbian erotica' is exceedingly popular to some men, often spoken of in a comfortable way, but the japanese yaoi can be seen as dirty or wrong, though it depicts two people in a relationship as opposed to only sexual contact.).
Um... yeah... I think it is as much art as anything else seen as art.
