The things lacking behind in the internet to judge friendship is the tone, facal expression and the speed of speech. So people can hind their intention easiler than in face to face contact. However, if we talk about communcations through internet, we can include communication means such as video conferancing which have everythng listed. Then nothing left behind to judge whether the other side is genuine or not.

No it can never be a real friendship when we start on internet, but it a kinda relation between two like minded people, who care for others' welfare or share their views, happiness and sorrows.

Over a period of time, if they happen to interact regularly with each other honestly, it can blossem in to a good friendship too!

You can try to get to know someone online but most real friendships are in person. You can't get to know someone online most of the time because typed sentences do not express emotion as much as words said.
