The earths crust is busted... the tectonic plate theory is simply that these busted plates sorta float around. Some scientists have even identified massive volcanos under the ocean along the cracks, if they could some how harness the energy these volcanoes produce, they could provide more than enough energy for the entire worlds electricity everyday.

Plate tectonics (from Greek τέκτων, tektōn "builder" or "mason") is a theory of geology which was developed to explain the observed evidence for large scale motions of the Earth's crust. The theory encompassed and superseded the older theory of continental drift from the first half of the 20th century and the concept of seafloor spreading developed during the 1960s.

It's the idea that all over earth the giant land masses are slowly shifting around on plates. They rub against one another, causing earthquakes & such. I think the plates are kind of like stacked on top of one another, so the top ones are sort of sliding around.

As you can see, I don't exactly have my PhD yet in geology.

It is suspected that there was once one large land form which broke apart on various "plates" and formed the continents. A look at a globe or map shows that the continents do look like they fit together like a puzzle.
