It's been around forever - Candid Camera was in the early '60s. But I think that Survivor was such a big hit that it really kicked off the current trend.
The thing is that those shows are relatively inexpensive to produce compared to dramas and sitcoms. You don't have to have a big staff of writers and you don't have to pay stars big money. Giving away a million dollar prize at the end of a season is nothing compared to paying 6 actors $1,000,000 each per episode like on on Friends its last couple of years.

I think COPS was one of the first reality shows....
"COPS is an American reality television series that follows police officers, constables, and sheriff's deputies during patrols and other police work. It is one of the longest-running television programs in the United States, and is often considered the original reality television program. Created by John Langley and Malcolm Barbour, it premiered on March 11, 1989, and has aired over 600 episodes. It won the American Television Award in 1993, and has earned four Emmy nominations. It celebrated its 650th episode on May 20, 2006."

The lack of finding good talent to write great shows such as All in the Family, Friends, Everbody Loves Raymond. Not to mention the moldy oldies like the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Bob Newhart's shows.

Isn't it clear there's something being distributed in a common substance? I take water as my beverage of choice, and it's right out of the tap, so I would say the stupid drugs are in soda pop. I don't get the attraction to these anti-theatrical productions. If watching the gassy masses is entertainment, I need a vacation.

The realization that networks could make popular shows without paying millions of dollars per episode, no money on big-name talent.
