2 things can cause the exhaust to glow red hot, these are
1. Ignition timing retarded, the spark occurs too late so that the air/fuel mixture is still burning as it enters the exhaust system.
2. air/fuel mixture too weak, this causes the air/fuel mixture to burn too hot.

I don't think the problem is a rich fuel mixture. I think it is just the opposite. It is lean. A lean mixture runs hotter because of the added air. Sort of like a cutting torch. A cutting torch gets hotter when you press the lever and release more oxygen to the flame. Whatever is wrong with it, take it in to a mechanic.

Maybe too rich fuel mix, getting ignited in exhaust, but it would run like a dog. Taking it to the garage might be the best bet.

My guess it the carb or fuel injector is running too rich and the fuel is still bieng burned after it leaves the cylinder, overheating your exhaust manifold.

for some reason the petrol is not all burning correctly, and some either overspill, ot excess is burning in the exhaust itsself. if you have injectors, chech for blocks, or spark pugs not sparking. i need more info to really help. ie make model and engine type
