A high fundus could mean many things.
1. The baby is large, meaning either:
(a) The baby is just big. Your wife may need a C-section.
(b) Your wife has gestational diabetes. The doctors can test for gestational diabetes with a glucose challenge test.
2. There is a LOT of amniotic fluid, meaning either:
(a) There is just a lot of fluid. I had this, and it was not a problem.
(b) Your wife has gestational diabetes. The doctors can test for gestational diabetes with a glucose challenge test.
3. A undetected twin. (Unlikley, considering the use of ultrasounds.)
4. The pregnancy is further along than you thought.

fundal height is the height of the uterus. It is measured from the symphysis pubis or pelvic bone to the umbilicus or belly button. Sometimes, extra big babies can mean the development of diabetes mellitus in the mother, which can often cause a much larger newborn than expected (even up to 10 or 11 lb). Sometimes these babies have to be removed by C-section because they are unable to pass through the Mother's pelvis.
Other factors can affect fundal height. One may be the over-production of amniotic fluid, a "extra large" placenta, or the birth of twins, etc. Please have your wife ask the midwife if the ultrasound sheds any light about the baby's proportions for gestational age. This information will be of some use to you.
Hope this helps :)

M y last baby was 8 lb 3 and he is nearly 6 months old now he has just started rolling over which my other sons didn't do till there were 8 months and they were small at between 5 lb2 and 6 lb 11 at birth. Don't worry the baby will be fine and also she could have a lot of fluid around the baby. Good luck.

It just means you are going to have a tall child. My son was 54cm born which is the height of the average 2month old. Plus no matter how many scans and estimates your wife has nothing is certain until your child is actually born. Your wife can still have a vaginal birth.
Don't worry and congrats!

All of my children were big. They were worried that my third was going to be 13 pounds. They did an ultra sound to make sure that he was not going to be that big. I always measured 2 or more weeks ahead. He was 9 pounds 2 ounces when he was born. My second child was almost 9 pounds 10 ounces when he was born. Now that he is six he is tall and skinny.

Haven't got a clue what that means... BUT... big babies are born healthy all the time... if there were any increased risks, you would have been told by the midwife.

Biger babies may make labor harder (not always) and the baby may be at risk for diabetes. I had a 10lb baby and he was perfectly fine and I was able to deliver him vaginally.
