Because before when measurments were done without standards such as an arm or paces, it became extremely confusing for everyone had different sizes of arms or different length of paces when they walked. So units were introduced so that a Meter or KM will be know as a specific distance for the whole world to use as the standard of describing lengths or heights or distances.

Units of measure are kinda a requirement for us to understand, catalogue and explain the universe around us.
Q: How big is the Earth?
A: Huge!
Q: How big is the sun?
A: Even Huger!
Q: How big is the moon?
A: Not as huge as the Earth but still big.
Q: How long can I do this before I get annoying?
A: About that long LOL
See those answers don't really give enough information to allow us to understand the size or relation of things around us. Your science teacher needs to come up with better assignments than this, it is "lame."

Well, they do make instructions more precise -- like, turn the corner at the bridge, go 2.2 km. and you'll get to my house.
However, I wonder if it's kind of a guy thing. Women, or so I've heard, tend to go by landmarks more -- turn at the bridge, and keep going, going, going until you see the brown house, and then just past that is my white house.
Science would be really weird if they did things by landmarks instead of measurements! "Put it in a tea cup until the bottom is covered, but just covered, not enough to actually drown a pea in, and then mix it with an equal amount of hydrochloric acid . . . ." I think there'd be a lot more explosions, as well.

If it didn't exist, then how could you explain to someone how far something was from where you are. maybe by saying, the next town is 1/4 tank of gas away, and maybe the mileage your car gets it different than that of your friends....or use what Edward Abby did in his book, "the monkey wrench gang" the trip was a two beer drive...
