Don't worry about pagerank.

Worry about getting people to link to your site and if
they don't like your pagerank then don't bother with
'em. Keep on adding content, content, content.
Sooner or later, people will ask you to swap links
or they will just link to your site. Like I'm going to do
now, to this excellent site (that is not mine I promise!)

Google explains pagerank on their site and this is the best explanation there is http://www.google.com/technology/

-------------------------------------
PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.
-------------------------------------

Basically, pagerank is impacted by your linking strategy and how many links you can get pointing to your site. However, I will not obsess about pagerank. Google has already realized that sites are gaming the pagerank system and thus request for links left and right in an effort to get more links and improve pageranks.

With their recent algorithm updates (Big Daddy from Dec 2005-Mar 2006), Google is now more strict with linking. They want to see natural linking patterns -- a site linking to you because you have great content. Especially if you are doing reciprocal linking, Google looks closely at the sites you are linking to - are the sites related to your website (if not, you can be penalized).

I strongly recommend that you read Matt Cutt's blog - he is a top software engineer at Google and in many ways he is the public face of Google as webmasters listen closely to what he says http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/

Wilson It sounds as though you had PR before, but have since lost it. Google may be penalizing you for some reason. It may be a number of things. Why not just ask them?
