Often nightmares are caused by stress, traumatic experiences, emotional difficulties, drugs or medication, or illness. However, some people have frequent nightmares that seem unrelated to their waking lives. Recent studies suggest that these people tend to be more open, sensitive, trusting, and emotional than average.

Every person's nightmares are unique to their situation. Without knowing further any details that could possibly 'suggest' something, it would be impossible to say further.
For example, a person who was in an abusive relationship, who had dreams about someone chasing them, would have that dream interpreted entirely differently than someone who had never had that experience (or any criminal experience whatsoever) and who simply was anxious about something going on at work (in which case, the dream could be fears of failure at work that would 'kill' you.)
Some nightmares even reflect incidences that occur subconsciously throughout the day. Reading an article about a fugitive being brought to justice, hearing from someone that they had spoken with an 'ex' of yours, even getting a notice that a bill you thought had paid wasn't and now its late, any of these throwaway moments could be a trigger for such a dream.
Dreams do not exist outside of the person who experiences them. As each person is unique, so too are their dreams.

To understand a dream, it’s helpful to keep in mind why and how we dream. When we sleep, the body and perception systems are shut down, but the brain remains active. The brain thinks about what has recently been most active during waking hours—experiences, thoughts and feelings accessed recently whether consciously or not. The brain is still active, so it works on this content, but not in a familiar, rational way. During sleep, this material is not related using input from the external real world, but rather by the brain connections already established in the cortex. So the story connectedness isn’t like everyday experience, but rather a strange, circuitous flow from one image to the next. So dreams aren’t magical messages to guide our life, but dream imagery is taken from everyday experiences, thoughts and feelings that matter most to us during our waking life. So it’s a mistake to apply standard symbol definitions, such as Freudian meanings or standard “dreammoods” symbols. All you need to do is think about what kind of imagery it is and how it relates to your daily life.
Very likely you've been feeling insecure or threatened during your waking life. Maybe not threatened by someone trying to kill you, and not necessarily the possibility of physical harm, though the world is a dangerous place. It could be financial harm (big bills to pay) or threats in the workplace (big deadlines or an aggressive boss). Whether you've been conscious of them or not, these feelings can remain active in your brain as you fall asleep, causing the dream associations.

I am always dreaming of people chasing me with guns or knives or trying to kill me. I used to feel like you at first but now I'm so used to it it doesn't bother me. What it actually means is that you're trying to run away from something in your every day life that you're not facing up to. So try & find out what it is you're running away from, face up to it & the nightmares will stop. Good Luck !!
